Grayson Highlands State Park, Mouth of Wilson, VA Grayson Highlands Ponies
The ponies are quite tame and if you plan on several walks or hikes in this area, you will most likely see one or more of the herd at some point in time. We spent 12 days here visiting friends who volunteer in the park on our way to the 2015 Newmar Kountry Klub International Rally in Lewisburg, WV. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Grayson Highlands SP, which features campsites with 30A electric + water plus tent sites and one group cabin. There are a number of 40’ sites which my 2005 Dutch Star fit into quite well but only four 50’ sites are only available if you call the Virginia parks directly. The park is accessible via US58, with a recommended route from I81 via VA16/US58. US58 is not for the faint of heart. The 7 miles from the VA16/US58 junction has many hairpin turns going up the mountain, with narrow lanes and rock outcroppings on your right and zero visibility around some turns. Since this was my second time to the park, I knew what to expect and planned our ‘ascent’ early in the day when I was well rested.
